  Satellite Link Design  for Mobile Terminal in Mediteranean Area


Abstract
      The goal of the satellite link design is to obtain high performance at an acceptable cost. Factors that the system designers must take into consideration, such as frequency used, antenna size, power supply, and digital transmission techniques, are related to each other. The understanding about the relationship among these factors is necessary for system designers to compromise involved factors in order to accomplish each particular purpose. This report will provide an overview of the satellite communication system and the satellite link design in terms of link power budget for a specific satellite which supports a natural hazard rescue system covering countries around the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea, including Italy, Greece, and Turkey. These countries are often exposed to earthquakes and heavy rain.

Introduction
      Nowadays, the satellite communication system is one of the main carrier in the world of telecommunication. As the time goes by, the satellite has been continuously improved its performances to achieve higher efficiency in order to be applicable to practically several types of operations. The satellite is therefore very eminent among any kinds of communications mediums because it can provide communication between 2 areas far apart where no any dedicated links may be able to reach. Furthermore, it will be primarily useful for some areas which are frequently encountered with the earthquake, by using portable terminal to communicate directly with each other through the satellite, because earthquake will damage fixed communication systems such as telephone exchanges or mobile base stations. The countries around the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea, including Italy, Greece, and Turkey, are located in the earthquake sensitive areas. As a result, the communication system well suitable for these areas is a satellite communication system.
